Candidate Information

Nomination Process

Nominations for the 2010 Municipal Elections may be filed in the Clerk's Department, Town of Georgina, 26557 Civic Center Road, Keswick, on or after January 4, 2010 during regular office hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. The last day to file a nomination is Friday, September 10th, 2010 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The completed nomination form must be accompanied by a certified cheque or money order payable to the Town of Georgina, or cash, in the amount of $200.00 for the office of Mayor, or in the amount of $100.00 for all other offices.

Candidates must not spend or raise funds for their election campaign until their registration/nomination form has been filed.

The prescribed form is available from the Clerk's Department or you may download the form

A Nomination Paper can only be filed in person or by an agent. Photocopies, fax or emailed versions of a signature are not acceptable.
The onus is on the candidate to file a Bona Fide Nomination Paper.

Mise en Candidature

Avis aux personnes intéressées à déposer une mise en candidature aux fins de l'élection municipale du 25 Octobre, 2010 dans la ville de Georgina. Les candidats peuvent déposer le formulaire de mise en candidature, pendant les heures d'ouverture du bureau à partir du 4 janvier, 2010 jusqu'au 10 septembre, 2010 à 1400h dernière journée de déclaration de candidature. Il faut payer les frais de dépôt de 200$ pour le Maire et 100$ pour les autres candidats, en espèce, par chèque certifié ou mandat-poste.

Jusqu'à ce que vous ayez présenté votre candidature, vous ne pouvez pas dépenser de fonds ou recueillir de fonds dans le cadre de votre campagne.

Le formulaire de mise en candidature sera disponible au bureau municipale de votre localité. Si vous désirez obtenir des renseignements supplémentaires, communiquez avec le greffier de votre municipalité on sur notre site Web.

Qualifications of a Member of Councils

Every person filing Nomination Papers must file a "Declaration of Qualifications" which can be found in the Municipal Elections 2010 Candidate's Package.

Every person is qualified to be elected or to hold office as a member of a Council of a local municipality,

  1. Who is at least eighteen years of age, a Canadian citizen, a resident of the Town of Georgina or the owner or tenant of land in the Town of Georgina or the spouse of such owner or tenant; and
  2. Who is entitled to be an elector under The Municipal Elections Act, 1996, and The Municipal Act, for the election of members of the Council; and who is not disqualified by this or any other Act from holding such office.
Disqualifications of a Member of Council

The following persons are disqualified from being elected to municipal office:

  • Any person not eligible to vote in the municipality;
  • An employee of a municipality unless he or she
    • Takes an unpaid leave of absence before being nominated, and
    • Resigns, if elected to the office;
  • A judge of any court;
  • A member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, a Senator or a member of the House of Commons;
  • An inmate of a penal or correctional institution under sentence of imprisonment;
  • A person who by reason of any violations of the election campaign financial requirements or violations for not filling the financial statements pursuant to the Municipal Elections Act, 1996.
Qualifications of a Member of a School Board

A person is qualified to be elected as a member of a board if he/she is:

  • A Canadian citizen
  • At least eighteen years old on or before voting day
  • A resident within the area of jurisdiction of the board
  • Eligible to be en elector of that school board for which the person is a candidate, and
  • Not disqualified by any legislation from holding office
Disqualifications of a Member of a School Board

A candidate for school board office cannot be a clerk, deputy clerk, treasurer or deputy treasurer of a municipality within the jurisdiction of a board.

  • Any person not eligible to vote in the municipality;

    • resigns, if elected to the office;

  • A person disqualified for violations of financial requirements or violations of requirements for filing financial information

The qualifications of Candidates can be found in The Municipal Act 2001 in Sections 256 and 258.

Every candidate must show proof of identity including photo I.D., proof of citizenship and qualifying address with the Town of Georgina when submitting the Nomination Paper.

Role of Council

The roles of Head of Council (Mayor) and Council can be found in The Municipal Act, 2001 in Sections 224 and 225.

Change of Address

Any document that the Clerk's Department is required to mail to the Candidate will be sent via Registered Mail. Because of the requirements to file financial reports and statements, the Elections staff will still need to be advised of any change of address for Candidates well into 2011. The onus is on the Candidate to fulfill all requirements of the Municipal Elections Act, so it is important that the Clerk's Department receive any address change information immediately.
