Back to school safety tips

As students throughout Georgina return to school, streets and bus routes will be busier than usual. The Town is reminding everyone to stay alert and plan ahead for a safe start to the school year.

For students

  • Always follow instructions from crossing guards
  • Use crosswalks or controlled intersections and look both ways before crossing
  • Put away headphones and mobile devices when crossing the street
  • Arrive early at bus stops and wait safely back from the curb

For drivers

  • Watch for students, especially in school and Community Safety Zones
  • Follow posted speed limits (30 to 40 km/h in Community Safety Zones)
  • Always stop when a crossing guard displays a stop sign
  • Stop for school buses with red lights flashing and wait until the lights are off and the bus is moving
  • Plan for extra traffic during school hours and allow additional travel time

Automated Speed Enforcement cameras are active in school areas and Community Safety Zones.

Riding an e-bike or e-scooter? Remember to ride in bike lanes or on the road where permitted, not on sidewalks. Wear a helmet and use lights or reflectors to stay visible. Follow the rules of the road and obey all signs and signals.

A little preparation can make mornings easier for families. Confirm bus routes before the first day, allow extra time for travel and check the Town’s Disruptions and Closures page for detours or construction updates.
