The Blue Box recycling program in the Town of Georgina will transition to a producer-led system as part of a province-wide shift under Ontario’s Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act. Residents can begin using the new blue box cart the week of Jan. 5, 2026.
Under this new framework, producers of packaging and paper products will become fully responsible for the costs and operation of the residential blue box program. This change is designed to create a more consistent and efficient recycling system across Ontario.
In Georgina, the new system will be managed by Circular Materials Ontario (CM), a not-for-profit producer responsibility organization. Green For Life Environmental (GFL) has been contracted by CM to provide curbside blue box collection services to residents.
What residents can expect:
- Residents will receive new 95-gallon wheeled recycling carts from GFL ahead of the transition.
- Recycling will be picked up every other week.
- Recycling carts will be collected using trucks with mechanical arms, replacing manual collection by collectors.
- Garbage, green bin (organics) and yard waste collection will continue to be managed by the Town.
No blue box collection for the week of Dec. 29, 2025
For the week of Dec. 29, 2025, there will be no blue box collection. Residents are asked to begin using the new blue box cart the week of Jan. 5, 2026.
