The Town of Georgina celebrated the official opening of the new Terry Fox Memorial Park today. It is dedicated to the memory of Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope, an inspiring attempt to run across Canada to raise money and awareness for cancer research.
“The new Terry Fox Memorial Park is more than a beautiful destination, it is a place where Terry’s inspirational story and enduring legacy can continue to inspire generations,” said Mayor Margaret Quirk. “Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope captured the hearts of Canadians and people around the world, and this special park gives our community a meaningful place to reflect on his courage, determination and remarkable vision. We were honoured to welcome Terry’s brother, Fred Fox, as we celebrated this important addition to our community. We also want to thank Treasure Hill, Ward 3 Councillor Dave Neeson, Town staff and Laurie Carriere, organizer of Georgina Terry Fox Run. We look forward to welcoming everyone to what is sure to become a favourite destination in Georgina.”
Terry Fox Memorial Park is located at 50 Thomas Smith St. in the new Orchid Trail subdivision, west of Woodbine Avenue off Old Homestead Road. The Fox family approved naming the park after the Canadian icon. Within the park, there are nine memorial panels that tell the story of Terry’s remarkable 5,373 km journey from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The park was designed to reflect the diverse Canadian landscapes that Terry ran through. The Marathon of Hope Trail takes visitors on a journey through a Maritime themed playground, a St. Lawrence River Splash Pad and the Canadian Shield where a youth zone obstacle course is featured.
Park amenities include –
- A fully accessible composite play structure
- A full river-themed splash pad that replicates his journey along the St. Lawrence River
- A large shade structure
- A walking path around the entire park
- An age-friendly fitness zone
- Both the playground and fitness equipment have fully rubberized accessible surfacing
- Interpretive signage throughout the park that speaks to Terry Fox’s journey
- Sloped rock walls to mimic the Rockies
- A Canada flag that is etched into the concrete surface of the park
