On Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 6 p.m., in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation, in partnership with the Town of Georgina, will hold a flag raising event at the Civic Centre. This day is a time to honour the children who never returned home, the survivors of residential schools and the families and communities forever changed by their legacy. Residents are invited to gather in remembrance, reflection and support.
In collaboration with the Town and Island View Business Centre, the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation are creating a Tiny Shoe Memorial to commemorate the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools. Community members can participate by donating new or lightly used children's shoes or boots. Donations may be dropped off at the event or in advance at –
- Georgina Civic Centre front lobby
- Tobacco Trails/Go In Fuels (78 Hadden Rd.)
All shoes will be donated to children's organizations in need.
The Town encourages everyone to wear an orange shirt purchased from organizations that support Indigenous charities and to use this day for meaningful reflection or participation in community events. To learn more, visit georgina.ca/TruthandReconciliation.
