Town of Georgina completes upgrades to Sutton Cenotaph

The Town of Georgina, in partnership with the Sutton Royal Canadian Legion Branch 356, the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation and Veterans Affairs Canada, has completed significant upgrades to the Sutton Cenotaph, located in Peace Park at 36 High St. The improvements have restored the memorial space and enhanced opportunities for public reflection and remembrance.

“The Town was proud and honoured to work with the Sutton Legion on this update to the Sutton Cenotaph and appreciates the support of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation and Veterans Affairs Canada,” said Mayor Margaret Quirk. “We understand the importance of remembering and paying respect to the people who have served our country. These memorials honour all who have served and sacrificed, creating a meaningful space for the community to gather, remember and reflect.”

The project included the installation of a new granite cenotaph on a new concrete foundation, in-ground recessed lighting to illuminate the five new monuments, custom Lest We Forget benches and landscaping improvements. A new plaque and bench honouring the contributions of Indigenous veterans to military service in Canada will be installed later this year.

The Town worked closely with community partners throughout design and construction to ensure the work reflected shared values of remembrance and reflection.

A public consecration ceremony will be hosted by the Sutton Legion on Nov. 2, 2025, ahead of the Remembrance Day ceremonies on Nov. 11.
