Town reminds residents to protect pipes during extreme cold

With extreme cold temperatures continuing across the region, the Town of Georgina is reminding residents to take steps to prevent frozen water pipes and services.

Extended periods of cold weather increase the risk of water pipes freezing, which can lead to burst pipes, water damage and service disruptions. Most frozen pipe issues are caused by inadequate heating or cold air reaching plumbing in basements, crawl spaces, garages or other unheated areas.

Residents are encouraged to ensure indoor areas with plumbing are kept warm and to seal drafts where cold air may enter. Pipes located along exterior walls or in poorly insulated spaces are especially vulnerable during prolonged cold snaps.

In some cases, residents with a history of frozen pipes may be advised by the Town to run a cold-water tap at a steady stream during extreme cold. Only residents who are specifically instructed by the Town to do so are eligible for compensation for increased water use. Residents who choose to run a tap without direction from the Town are responsible for any additional water charges.

The Town maintains records of properties that have experienced frozen water services and works proactively with affected residents to manage recurring issues. Tenants experiencing water service problems are asked to contact their landlord, who should then reach out to the Town.

Residents should watch for warning signs of frozen pipes, including frost forming on pipes, reduced water pressure or no water flow. If frozen pipes are suspected, a licensed plumber should be contacted to assess the situation. Open flames or heating devices should never be used to thaw pipes.

The Town has detailed information available online, including prevention tips, service responsibilities and what to do if pipes freeze. Residents are encouraged to review this information so they know how to protect their homes and who to contact during extreme cold.

More information is available on the Town’s website.
