A reminder for residents of several waste and recycling updates taking effect in January 2026, including recycling cart collection, large item pick-up changes, and the delivery of the 2026 waste and recycling calendar.
Recycling cart collection begins Jan. 5
Recycling cart collection begins Jan. 5, 2026, with recycling collected every two weeks using the new 360-litre wheeled carts.
During the first collection week of Jan. 5, residents may place extra recyclable materials beside the cart if items do not fit inside. During the week of Jan. 5 only, residents can set out overflow recycling beside the cart in clear plastic bags or bundled cardboard. There is no limit for this one-time overflow collection.
Recycling cart placement reminders
To ensure proper collection, residents are reminded to:
- Set your recycling cart with wheels facing your house and the lid opening to the street
- Recycling carts must have at least one metre (three feet) of clearance on all sides, keeping them away from green bins, fences or vehicles
- Place carts on a flat surface, clear of snow and ice
Carts must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day.
What can be recycled
Accepted recyclable materials may change under the new program. Residents are encouraged to check what items can be recycled by visiting circularmaterials.ca/recycleontario.
Old blue box drop-off locations
With the start of automated recycling cart collection, blue boxes will no longer be required. Residents are encouraged to reuse or repurpose old blue boxes where possible.
For anyone who wishes to recycle them, the Town will host three blue box drop-off locations from Jan. 5 to Jan. 19, 2026.
- Georgina Ice Palace
90 Wexford Dr., Keswick - Sutton Arena
48 Hawkins St., Sutton - Pefferlaw Lions Hall
38 Pete’s Lane, Pefferlaw
In addition, residents may drop off old blue boxes at the Georgina Waste Transfer Station at 23068 Warden Ave. from Jan. 5 to Jan. 30, during regular business hours.
Large item collection changes starting January 2026
Beginning January 2026, large item collection is now a scheduled service handled by a dedicated collection vehicle. To schedule a pick-up, residents must purchase a large item tag for $12 per item and call GFL at 1-866-421-5625. There is a five-item limit per collection and items will not be collected unless a special pick-up has been booked. Requests must be received by 11 a.m. on the Friday before the garbage collection week to be collected that week.
Scheduled large item collection will begin the week of Jan. 12, 2026.
2026 waste and recycling calendar
Residents received a printed, two-sided, 11 x 17 waste and recycling calendar in their mailbox. A limited number of booklet-style calendars will be available soon at Town facilities and Georgina Public Library locations.
