Georgina Sports Hall of Fame

The year 2026 marks the establishment of the Georgina Sports Hall of Fame – an initiative dedicated to honouring the achievements and contributions of local athletes, coaches, officials and sports builders. The Town will honour individuals whose excellence and dedication have made a lasting impact on Georgina’s sports culture and brought pride to the community.

Classification of inductees

There are two categories of inductees into the Georgina Sports Hall of Fame: “Athletes” and “Builders.”

  • Athletes: Individuals who have achieved outstanding success in their sport.
  • Builders: Individuals who have made significant contributions to the development and advancement of sport in Georgina. For the purpose of selection, all candidates other than athletes shall be considered builders.

Eligibility criteria for nominees 

General criteria

Any nominee must have participated in a recognized sport and the sport must meet three of the following four criteria:

  1. Physical, competitive and adheres to standard rules.
  2. Affiliated with a provincial or national sport federation.
  3. Included in multi-sport events, such as the Olympics, Pan Am Games, Canada Games, Provincial Games, etc.
  4. Recognized on the Ontario Sports Inc. list of provincial sports.

Nominees who have attained prominence or made a significant contribution to sport in Georgina, or who have brought honour to the municipality, are eligible for induction.

Specific induction criteria

  1. Residency requirement:
    • Athletes must have been residents of Georgina during their performance or have performed outside of Georgina while still being considered a resident or product of Georgina.
    • An athlete or builder may also be considered if from an outlying area, provided it can be documented that they were viewed by the province or nation as being from Georgina.
  2. Personal success in competitive sports:
    • Nominees must have achieved considerable personal success in competitive sports.
    • Success could have occurred in classifications such as “open,” “closed,” age/ability classifications (e.g., masters, seniors, high school, universities, disabled, etc.).
    • All levels of athletic endeavour should be judged equally.
  3. Broad criteria:
    • The criteria should encompass both amateur and professional sports.
    • Nominees’ qualifications must be conclusively documented.
  4. Human nominees only:
    • Membership or induction is restricted to humans.
  5. Builders:
    • Builders may include coaches, officials, executives, trainers, owners, sponsors etc., who have made an outstanding contribution to the sports community over an extended period.
    • Builders may be nominated at any time, based on their lifetime contributions.
  6. Retirement or age requirement for athletes:
    • Athletes must have concluded their careers in the sport, or at the level nominated, at least three years prior to nomination.
  7. Team recognition:
    • Teams are not inducted into the Georgina Sports Hall of Fame but may be recognized annually on Georgina’s honour roll of outstanding teams.
    • Teams are recognized based on the following priorities:
      1. World or international championships
      2. National championships
      3. Provincial championships
      4. Other teams deemed worthy of recognition by Council
    • Recognition occurs according to the chronological order of achievements.

Nomination process

The following outlines the structured process for nominating and selecting inductees into the Georgina Sports Hall of Fame:

  1. Nomination submission: Nominations forms will be available in digital or hard-copy format are required to be submitted prior to the established annual deadline.
  2. Nominee evaluation: Town staff will review and verify all nomination submissions received.
  3. Induction selection: Town staff will prepare and present a confidential report to Council, summarizing all nomination submissions. The selection of inductees will then be made by Council.

Sport Team Honour Roll

Georgina Sport Team Honour Roll information

Sport teams may be recognized annually on Georgina’s honour roll of outstanding sport teams which is separate from the Georgina Sports Hall of Fame.

Sport teams are recognized based on the following priorities:

  • Sport team represents the Town of Georgina in competitive sport play.
  • World or International sport championships
  • National sport championships
  • Provincial sport championships
  • Other teams deemed worthy of recognition by Council

Recognition occurs according to the chronological order of achievements.

Working Group

Georgina Sports Hall of Fame Working Group

The working group will support Town staff through promotion, community engagement, event coordination and research related to potential inductees.
