The work has started to transform Lake Drive into a seasonal multi-use pathway (MUP) between Civic Centre Road and South Drive. Vehicles will travel one-way eastbound along this length of Lake Drive East starting at the end of June.
"The new seasonal multi-use pathway on Lake Drive is an important step in promoting active transportation, improving safety and enhancing the recreational experience for everyone,” said Mayor Margaret Quirk. “During the high-traffic summer months, this scenic route offers pedestrians and cyclists a safer way to enjoy Lake Drive, while encouraging motorists to share the road responsibly. These improvements reflect our commitment to building a healthier, more connected and people-friendly community.”
Once construction is complete, the north lane will feature a multi-use pathway along Lake Simcoe. The south lane will be a one-way eastbound vehicular lane. This configuration is seasonal. The MUP/one-way arrangement will be removed by Oct. 3, 2025 and re-installed in spring 2026. Emergency services, waste pickup, school buses and Canada Post will adjust their routes to continue providing services.
“Lake Drive is a unique and much-loved part of Georgina, offering stunning views along the shoreline of Lake Simcoe,” said Ward 3 Councillor Dave Neeson. “This new seasonal multi-use pathway is about improving safety for everyone, pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. By promoting safe, active use and highlighting the natural beauty that defines our community, we can ensure this shared space works for everyone.”
Additional traffic calming measures such as stop signs, speed humps, signage, line painting and pedestrian crossings will be permanently implemented on Lake Drive between Varney Road and Dalton Road.
