On Sept. 30, 2024, at 3:30 p.m., in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Town of Georgina, in partnership with the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation, will hold a flag-raising event at the Civic Centre. Residents are welcome to attend this event commemorating the tragedy of residential schools in Canada and their continuing impact on Indigenous communities.
The Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation in partnership with the Island View Business Centre and the Town, are creating a Tiny Shoe Memorial to honour the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools. People can participate by dropping off new or lightly used children's shoes or boots at the Civic Centre front lobby until Sept. 27. Donations can also be made at the Island View Business Centre or at the flag raising event. All shoes will be donated to children's organizations in need.
The Town encourages everyone to wear orange and use this day for meaningful contemplation or participation in events. To learn more, visit georgina.ca/TruthandReconciliation.
