John Graves Simcoe Day

Event date

Town Council has proclaimed August 4, 2025 as 'John Graves Simcoe Day' throughout the Town of Georgina.  Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe was a British army officer, politician and administrator who served as the lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada from 1791 to 1796.  He founded York, now known as Toronto, and was fundamental in introducing institutions such as courts of law, trial by jury, English common law, freehold land tenure and was instrumental in passing the Act Against Slavery in 1793.  He is seen by many Canadians as a founding figure in Canadian history, especially by those in Southern Ontario.
