Cardboard Toboggan Race

Georgina’s annual Cardboard Toboggan Races are back and better than ever! Gather your creativity and engineering skills to design and build the ultimate toboggan using only cardboard and tape, and then put it to the test on the hill.

Awards

The awards that are handed out include:

  • Largest Sled Award
  • Most Creatively Designed Sled Award
  • Farthest Travelled Sled Award (calculated by measurement)
  • Fastest Travelled Sled Award (calculated for Electronic Speed Determiner)
  • “ROC” Bottom Award (Participation Award)

Participant and team information

  1. This event is open to participants of all ages.
  2. Team entries may be made as an individual or as a team of one to two people.
  3. All participants must wear a CSA-approved ski helmet during the race (helmets are available for rental at the ROC Chalet).
  4. All participants must submit a registration form and a signed waiver release form (for children under the age of 18, they must have parental consent).
  5. Costumes and themes are encouraged.

Toboggan/sled regulations

  • Cardboard
  • Tape
  • Paint
  • Wax
  • Tin foil
  • Plastic sheeting
  • Shower curtain
  • Zip ties
  • Garbage bags
  • Flags (as long as they meet materials acceptable)
  • Tarps or poly tarps
  • Some glues
  • Any material that does not compromise the safety of the participants or the integrity of the hill (accepted by the inspectors prior to event).

Materials not acceptable to use include the following;
If you are unable to remove such objects from your sled, you will not be allowed to race.

  • No hardware is permitted (wood, hard plastic, metal, screws, piping, etc.)
  • Traditional sleds may not be attached (i.e. crazy carpets, GT’s, saucers, etc.)
  • Your sled must be free of sharp edges, pointed objects or any other feature that may be deemed dangerous by the inspectors.
  • You may not use: tar-based substance; epoxy glue; fibre-glass resin; two-part varnishes or any other two-part substance; or glues that harden into solids that may be deemed dangerous or may potentially leave hazardous debris on the hill.
  • You may not use screws or material; mechanical fasteners; nails; staples; or any other means of holding your sled together that may be deemed dangerous or may potentially leave hazardous debris on the hill.

Competition and judging regulations

Judging for largest sled and most creative design will take place during the check-in period between noon to 1 p.m.

Farthest travelled and fastest awards will be determined during the downhill portion of the race.

During the downhill portion, one team member (or an assistant) may push their toboggan (maximum of four steps) before the starting line and must be in their sled with all other team mates prior to the back of the sled crossing the starting line.

All riders must stay completely inside of their sled at all times during the race.
