    Town extends and revises COVID-19 business support programs

    Council has approved extending COVID-19 business support programs until the end of 2022, with a number of minor modifications to expand the eligibility criteria. The programs include grants, a development application fee rebate and a temporary patio program. 

    “The pandemic has been challenging for everyone, especially our business community. Continuing these programs is essential to support their recovery,” said Mayor Margaret Quirk. “After two years of offering the programs, we’ve been able to modify them to best meet the business’ current needs.”

    Phone disruption at Civic Centre – Jan. 27

    On Jan. 27 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., there will be a service disruption with the phone system at the Civic Centre. During this time after hours, if you have an urgent matter, please be advised of the following methods to contact the Town for on-call service.

    Snow lifts in south Keswick and Sutton this week

    Our operations crew will be out this week conducting snow lifts in urbans areas where an abundance of snow has accumulated. Early in the week, watch for crews in south Keswick as well as on High Street in Sutton.

    There may be some traffic interruptions and we thank you for your patience. Snow lift operations are a key part of the Town’s effort to keep the streets clear and passable for residents and emergency vehicles. This also helps with drainage by keeping catch basins clear.

    Town lowers flags for Georgina Fire and Rescue Services captain

    The Town of Georgina is lowering flags at Town facilities to honour Georgina Fire and Rescue Services Captain Jeff Day who passed away today. 

    Captain Day joined the Town in 2001. He was a well-respected and critical member of the fire service, and a long-serving employee with 21 years of service.

    Town Council and staff extend condolences to his wife and two young children.

    Significant weather event lifted – winter maintenance event still in effect

    The significant weather event declared by the Town will be lifted at noon today, Jan. 18, 2022. The winter maintenance event remains in effect. This means parked vehicles must be removed from all Town roads until further notice. Please drive according to weather conditions and remember to leave room around snowplows.

    Snow removal efforts continue throughout the community and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we move this large volume of snow.

    Winter maintenance and significant weather events declared

    The Town has declared a Winter Maintenance Event and a Significant Weather Event, effective at midnight, Sunday, Jan. 16. All parked vehicles must be removed from all Town roads until further notice. Failure to do so may result in a ticket and fine being issued per Bylaw 2002-0046 (TR-1).

    A Significant Weather Event has also been declared following Environment Canada’s snowfall warning.

    Fatal house fire in Keswick

    At approximately 5 a.m., Jan. 15, 2022, Georgina Fire and Rescue Services responded to a single dwelling fire at 351 Miami Drive in Keswick.

    Upon arrival, the structure was fully engulfed. A single occupant of the home was discovered once the home was searched. Tragically, the individual lost their life.

    “This is a terrible tragedy in our community and serves as a reminder that we all need to be checking our smoke alarms regularly,” said Fire Chief Ron Jenkins.

    Charges laid following incident at the ROC

    Investigators with the York Regional Police Special Victims Unit – Sexual Assault Section have arrested and charged a 15-year-old male in connection with a sexual assault against a child in the Town of Georgina.

    On Sunday, Jan. 9, 2022, at approximately 1:05 p.m., York Regional Police responded to a ski resort located at 26479 Civic Centre Rd. in the Town of Georgina, for a report of a sexual assault. Officers learned that a 10-year-old boy had gone into the public washroom and a male had touched him. Officers were unable to locate the suspect.
