    Statement on the passing of former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney

    The following is a statement from Mayor Margaret Quirk on the passing of former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney:

    “On behalf of Members of Council and the Town of Georgina, we were saddened to learn of the passing of former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, Canada’s 18th prime minister.

    Shoreline hazard watch

    The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority advises that temperatures are forecast to rise today with daytime highs of 9 Celsius to 16 Celsius over the weekend and through early next week. Approximately 1mm of rainfall is forecast for overnight and an additional 5-10 mm next Tuesday. 

    The current wind forecast indicates south winds today in a range of 13-17 km/hr with wind gusts up to 29 km/hr. The forecast for the next few days ranges from 14-20 km/hr winds with gusts of up to 30 km/hr.

    Georgina rolls out a new five-year Economic Development and Tourism Strategy

    Council has approved a new Economic Development and Tourism Strategy, and an implementation plan is already underway.

    With a proactive approach and vision for the municipality with its 2023-2027 Corporate Strategic Plan, the Town seeks to be the most progressive, inclusive and vibrant growing community on Lake Simcoe, with a balance of rural and urban character. The creation and implementation of an Economic Development and Tourism Strategy was identified as a key action to deliver on its goal of diversifying our local economy.

    Celebrate the opening of the Multi-Use Recreation Complex

    It’s almost time. The new Multi-Use Recreation Complex (MURC) officially opens its doors on March 2, 2024 at 10 a.m. All are welcome to attend this family-friendly event. One of the largest projects in the Town’s history, the MURC is a state-of-the-art facility offering programs and activities for people of all ages and abilities.

    Town lowers flags to honour former Fire Chief Bill O’Neill

    The Town has lowered its flags to honour former Fire Chief Bill O’Neill who recently passed away. Chief O’Neill joined the Georgina Fire Department on Oct. 1, 1980, and was hired as a career firefighter on March 30, 1987. He was promoted to the position of Fire Prevention Officer in 1990 and became Deputy Fire Chief in 1998. 

    On Sept. 1, 2001, he was appointed the Fire Chief of Georgina Fire until his retirement on Dec. 31, 2012. Chief O’Neill served the community with pride and dedication for more than 32 years.

    The Council of the Town of Georgina invites people to volunteer in their community as a member of the following committees. The appointment is for the remainder of the 2022-2026 Term of Council. Current Town board and committee members are encouraged to apply.
